Do many people ride Harleys in the UK?

What is the most popular bike type there (sport, cruiser)?

"What's a Harley?" I love it!!! Ha!

Everyone here thinks Harleys are so cool....to me,they are overpriced, overrated and over whatever else you can think of..I wouldn't own one unless someone just gave one to me, and then I'd trade it in on a Suzuki : )

AND....have money left over!

what are the helmet laws in the UK and what is the feeling of the average biker about helmets?

You have to wear one, to BS (British Standard). Can be open face, full face or Flip lid.
Only Sikhs are exempt because of the turban and their religion.

There is a group called MAG (Motor Cycle Action Group) who have protested for years against compulsory lid wearing. Fred Hill was their main man until he died a few years back. A friend is London Rep and their "meets" are rather small now days compared to what I remember.
I met Fred on many occasions and he was a most polite and educated person.

Hope that helps.

yes, it did help....interesting article about Fred Hill and his campaign, I think the idea is summed up with this sentence:
'Please note that MAG (and Fred himself) is not against the wearing of helmets, merely the infringement of personal choice in being forced to."

Many people in US believe it should be a personal choice whether or not to wear a helmet..and there are some states that do not require that you wear a helmet at all. The state that I live in Missouri...just vetoed the vote to get rid of helmet laws.

Personally, I believe its a personal choice also, I would probably still use a helmet if there were no helmet laws most of the time, but then there are those long cruises on winding country roads where not having one would be wonderful. We have to use regulation helmets here too but many people (including myself) have helmets that are less restricting and not up to code..almost like going helmetless..but, I only wear mine for those quiet country trips.

What is the feeling of the people there? I suppose sport bike riders would lean more towards wearing a helmet because of the speed and risk they take...I don't know..you tell me.

A lot would wear one TBH.
I even with a lid had a fractured skull when despatch riding. Yet I have ridden without a lid in some counrty roads for a few miles. However i would always wear one in town even if the law said we had a choice. I know I would be dead now if it had not been for a lid.

I believe a lot of the "hard core" bikers and the "hard core wannabe" bikers here would go lidless but I agree with you, most people would probably still where them...especially on city streets...I got rearended by a tractor trailer 18 wheeler in my car out on the interstate....would not have mattered either way had I been on my bike : (

Well said, Spacie...I agree...everyone here in the US get along great on bikes...not like it used to be 50 years ago when if you didn't ride a Harley you weren't poopoo...now...everyone gives the "2wheeler wave" no matter what kind of bike you're on ....I think that's cool...

as for the Harley bashing...I'm probably just jealous I can't afford one : )
