Oh Dear, I seem to be coming over all thoughtful again!
I heard something that made me think today, it costs about £5-600 per week to send a drug addict on a residential detox and rehab course and, once they're clean, it costs less than that to offer training/counselling if wanted.
Now I know all the BS about "Having a bloody holiday at the taxpayer's expense" but think on this, to keep the same person in even a low security open nick (like Butlins without the beer) costs something like £300 PER DAY and that doesn't include any re-education. Do the sums boys and girls, the cash comes out of your pockets.

probably cheaper to just give em the smack in the first place i believe that pharmacutical grade heroin costs about 10 p a gram. also if administered by a doctor or under medical supervision the likelyhood of OD is much less.... the gear is clean and not cut with all manner of rubbish, you cut out the crook and the need to commit crimes to feed the habit. seems the way to go to me. It was proposed recently that doctors would be able to prescribe heroin on the understanding that the addict would have to be weaned off the drug in stages. it would of course be better if folk didnt get involved with addictive drugs but at the end of the day people do stupid things all the time.

Ah yes Bear, but that would be condoning criminality, far better waiy til the crime is committed and then punish the wrongdoer.

the latest thought (not all that recent) is that addiction is an illness (albeit self inflicted) and it makes sence for the state to try and help people free themselves of the addiction . giving free heroin to addicts would cut the crime rates according to the experts as they wouldnt need to go burgling peeps houses and mugging folk for their next fix.
i saw a programme on telly a while back and it featured two heroin addicts one was getting her smack from a doctor (illeagaly as it happens) and the other was on street heroin.one was holding down a job in her late 30's and looked healthy the other was in her early 20's allways in trouble with plod and having medical problems associated with injecting herself with all manner of adulterated rubbish.
the thing is other than addiction heroin (when clean ie medical grade) isnt actually bad for a person. the street heroin is the stuff that causes the problems. after all if your a crook flogging smack you want to maximise your profit margins so you mix the heroin with anything that is vaugly the same colour (brick dust etc). it just makes more sence to just give em the gear and help em back to a healthy and productive way of life. course, it wont happen that would be far too sensible.
oh and i dont have that much sympathy for addicts by the way they brought it on themselves i do however have sympathy for all those folk who get mugged and burgled on a daily basis.
