I listened to the program "Genius" on the radio last week and a rather spiffing idea was put forward. We hold a referendum on the death penalty and, if the death penalty is reionstated, all those who voted in favour have their name entered onto a database. Now comes the clever bit; if someone is executed and later found to be innocent, a name is picked at random from the database of pro-hangers and that person is executed as a way of saying sorry to the family of the wrongly convicted person. What do you say folks?

That is a very interesting view. It's made me think about it.But in these modern times with all the new techniques for testing DNA should the wrong person ever put to death. I really don't know what the answer is,As bear says the death penalty dose not stop people in America killing each other so will it work here. But I would still at this present time vote for the death penalty to be brought back.

another point about the death penalty is that it makes everyone culpable in a state sponsored homicide. i dont agree with murder no matter who is doing it. When i was doing that doorman course recently they touched on an interesting part of the job. If a punter is kicking off and harming another and a doorman is in fear for his or the person being assualted life then the use of lethal force is allowed!!!!! makes ya think dosnt it?

Isn't the phrase they use "Proportionate response"?

nope was defo the use of deadly force. dosnt mean however that the doorman wouldnt be prosecuted but it is unlikely (given the circumstances , witnesses, and other injured parties etc) that a conviction would happen. something similar happened up here in the local town where a punter was ejected from a club got back in and was then thrown down a fire escape. he died. the case was thrown out as the door staff showed that the man in question was violent and was a danger to others etc. i was surprised as well.

I still support the use of the death penalty. The greatly reduced use of it here (USA) has had an inverse affect. Crime continues to rise. I'm not saying that it's the answer to crime, but it certainly is a permanent cure to a life of crime!

acc i think bringing it bac wood b a good idea, costs a fortune to keep emm in jail for a start, and when there dead they aint gonna reoffend ,id also have the death penaltiy for pedos and rapeists , with the modern tecnology we have today i think there would be few innocents found guilty , oh n if the job comes up id gladly apply

i agree,no one has the rite to take life.if u take someones then they found innocent, the family have right to retribution..millions get killed by governments in war...so who tries and executes them?...no one...read ure history books,,the arabs still to this day, behead women for adultary.there would be very few left in this country if we adopted their barbaric ways.

The death penalty may not be the answer to crime, but I believe for a sane person it is a serious deterrent. There is an old saying here, "that lock helps keep an honest man honest." Think about it. If we as a society do not stand together as a whole and demonstrate the negative, then who is going to prevent the things that make us shudder in fright at the horrors that "mankind" has so aptly demonstrated themselves capable of. To use another old saying, the needs of the many over the needs of the one.

if it is iron clad set in stone that the person is guilty then i agree it should be death. i aint talking hanging just give em a lethal injection of something, they r still gonna die and know this so i'm sure they will be crapping themselves. has the goverment not realised something tho ................. there r more people in this country than ever b4 and even if the percentage of offends stays the same that still amounts to more people ending up in jail ............. so if the prisons r overflowing is it not time to make new prisons to spread them out rather than send em home with a tag on?

Let life mean life for sure but I hope that I will never have to participate in the premeditated murder of another human being.

The "American Heritage Dictionary" definition of murder. "The unlawful killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice." found at http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/murder I would really have a difficult time associating the term "murder", with the use of capitol punishment. Throughout history all forms of society have made the decision that certain individuals have committed crimes so heinous, that to allow them to live poses too great a risk to the rest of society. As long as society cannot muster the will and determination to effectively deal with the criminal element in terms that they understand, crime will continue to grow! Capitol punishment is just that. Punishment in kind for crimes committed.

The whole legal system in the UK is a shambles. With such short sentances being given and people knowing that they will be protected by such pathetic human rights laws it not a wonder our crime figures any higher. Whats it all about when somebody gets 12 months for an offence and they are out in 6 ? Years ago the country used to be proud that everyone held together in a crisis or simply stuck up for their rights which made us the GREAT Britain we once knew and loved. Bring back the death penalty for the most serious of crimes. While your at it double all the current jail sentances and abolish "Good Behaviour" deals so the deterent is there to stop crime in the first place. When you know somebody like I do who lost a 19 year old son, killed by 3 youths after a night out ......... and have seen the agony it causes , then your views on the death penalty may change. I know a Mother, Father, 2 sisters, aunts, uncles and grand parents who will spend the rest of their live wondering why somebody they loved were stolen in such an awful way. And the two people arrested and charged will be out of prison in 12-15 years. So whats fair in live ?

To all those human rights activists out there, food for thought: If person A kills person B, then person A has taken away person B's right to live. Therefore, person A forfeits there own right to live. Simple. And before people start shouting "but what do you know, what about the family of person A" Guess what, I am family of person A, my brother is in jail for murder. If he was sentenced to death, I would have to deal with that. It's about time that there be some real serious consequences to acts of murder, otherwise it will continue.
