as some of u lot know i have a nearly 1 year old black lab.......
he has now turned so distructive i darnt leave him alone for long...
he has distroyed my french doors, photos, and now started on books, he is locked in the dining room where we remove anything he can get his big paws on, seems now he can take books off the small bookcase we have in the room.
is there any one who has had a simialr prob and how did u cure it.....we are now getting desperate if he carries on im in the mind to re home him, not that i want to.
we have ignored him we have shouted at him, nothing works,
so any advice would be taken on board
he has been 'done' which has calmed him a little but still bloody well distructive...
oh anyone got any cheap french doors lol

Labbies have this tendency to chew things but they do grow out of it. try making sure when he is in room on his own there are plenty of soft chewy toys around he might leave the rest of ur stuff alone

unfortunatlly duc some breeds seem to be far more distructive than others ,, had a couple of labs , both seemed to be much the same , one had the complete new kitchen and back off a washing machine ,, we did much the same as you, tellin off , havin him doctored , in the end im afraid they just grew out of it,, which is no help when your homes being destroyed, in the middle of this we kenneld them outside, not everyones choice , but desperation im afraid , and i will say they were a lot healthier for it , as ox said , there has to be a alpha dog ,, which is you or hubby , but unfortunattly this wont prevent the destruction,, maybe theres a dog behaviour expert locally that could give you some advice , ps my french doors are the same due to great dane puppy, oh and the stairs , chairs, table, wall unit lol,,

One reason dogs usually chew on things is because theyre bored do you leave your dog much, labs quite intelligent so they suffer from this.
Tho as previous male says could be a dominance thing so yes need to let dog know whos boss.

he will grow out of it but unfortunately you have the "terrible twos" to get through first!!! :-)

hi Duc...I m unsure of your timetable etc but a good run in the morning and at the end of the day is a good thing.I know it takes time , but you can wittle it down to one good walk/run in the evening.. He may be bored Get a routine established and they are retrievers they need by nature to' bring back' for you. there is one shooting lab and a couple of shooting labs at another member of my families and one pet one who is the same age as your guy. She is ok. But I was pretty strict with her. They are very trainable and I hope you persevere with him, even at his age you can turn this around..in fact its a good age.. (Roeby will tell you how strict they are with the gun dogs! I m sure she remembers Rufus. lol ) As Oxo says they need someone in charge. I hope you win through Duc it would be a shame to lose him. Let me know how you get on , I could help yu get him trained but it would be harsh here they dont go much on pampring dogs. He would be utside in a kennel etc. anyway let me know. Abbie xxxxxxxxx

thanks darc, im not into putting dogs into outside kennels im sure the police would be round here with him barking all night, its a bit built up where i live,
he does get a good run on the park most days or just awalk around the streets, he is very strong and can pull me over,
he does understand the word 'no' and im not that soft on him nowadays, not that i ever was as i knew what labs where like,
we might have to get some one in to help us train him, in house like,

its an age thing at that age they arte feeling their hormones but you dont need to get him done glad to see no-one suggested that
best thing is another dog two are much better and more contented.
meantime give him plenty things to chew but not old shoes or anything resembling things he shouldn't chew.
at the end of the day its part of having a dog

lol i see my name was mentioned earlier, well i had a springer spaniel and great dane who did the same things, the great dane actually ate my three piece suite one day, the day after that he was loaded into my landrover and came to work with me every day which did cure the chewing lol but very drastic for most people to cope with. they will grow out of it and at a year old its to be honest just starting and this could go on for a year or so yet. another step which is not to everyones likeing is a big indoor cage, not an ideal situation but would obviously cure being able to chew anything, i do agree with the comment of a companion but then you may have two of them chewing lol, lots of toys and special chewing ones, but it comes down to the amount of time the dogs are left, hes obviously rebelling at this fact, oh well sit tight hopefully this phase will pass very quickly, and good luck xxxxx

i have a 5 year old black lab at the moment and had a yellow one before that. they chew all the time for the first couple of years. try this paint stuff he chews with that stuff you can buy to stop children from biting their nails. also get him some hide chews really thick ones (they love em and it keeps em quiet for a good few hours). make a big fuss of him as often as possible, labs love human interaction. as for him being powerfull i have the same problem with max. he is bloody huge and very strong and even as heavy as i am he can still pull me over. choke chains do not work with labs . get a HALTI. its like a muzzle sort of. you put it on over his muzzle and adjust it so it wont rub his eyes then clip your lead to it underneath. when he tries to pull you he will find his nose hits his chest. (he will hate it and try to get the halti off , persevere with it though and eventually he will stop pulling.) NEVER allow your dog to enter the house/ any building or leave before you! Always make sure he knows who is boss (dogs that lead consider themselves to be dominant) Never feed him untill you have eaten , dont feed him from the table etc.
best bet is to find a local puppy training school they will be able to help in lots of ways. oh and by the way your one year old is going to get bigger and stronger. he will grow out of the chew faze max had pretty much stopped with it by the time he was 16 months. but it can go on for a good long time. educate him with chew toys and hide chews and he will leave you furniture alone soon enough. good luck. labs are by far the best dogs to have as pets they are daft but gentle and mostly not a bite in em.
