You may remember after I sold my Sv I cancelled my fully paid up insurance with Bennets and received a letter from them saying I owed £17 cancellation fee. I subsequently rang them and was told told this was a mistake. Yesterday I received another letter demanding the money and threatening me with court action. I have since written a letter which will need to be opened with oven gloves telling them what I think and saying I am happy to go to court and will charhe them my £350 per day fee. I also sent them and incoice for £35 made up of 3 telephone cals @ £5 per call and one letter @ £15 payable in 7 days be interesting to see what reply I get OH dont cancel your insurance with Bennets they are crooks

its funny but bennetts have always been great for us, we have had many accidents, many thefts, changed numerous bikes, and now they have started a policy for more than one bike they have saved us a packet, always had great service to be honest.

Scott was charged by a different insurance company to cancel his car policy. £30. It started at £80 and with haggling and phone calls, got it to £30 and just paid the stupid thing. Not ideal I know, but it was worth £30 to stop the hassle.

"battle plus the more they reply the more it costs them"... Sorry kenp, got to disagree with you 100% there m8, all they'll do is hike up the premiums to cover the extra admin charges so it's the customer that pays in the end!!! My advice? go to Carole Nash, I've been with them for nearly ten years now and they've always been resonable with their premiums and if you're not happy with a renewal cost or any other matter they'll talk it through with you. Another thing to remember, cheapest isn't always the best idea! Outlaw.

kenp, Agree with you m8 that the cancellation fee is a liberty 'cos the person doing the cancellation for you is sittng in an office on a keyboard anyway. Maybe a few strong words in writing, everytime this happens to one of us, might go some way to trying to put a stop to this "rip-off". I don't charge for my time when I write out a cheque and I wouldn't expect to pay out when someone pushes a few buttons to cancel my policy!!! Outlaw.

Have finally received a reply from bennets re the charge they made for cancelling my policy. Appernetly they chatge £30 for cancelling a policy and deduct what they owe you in remaining premium from this charge which is why I was charged £17.47. However they say as a goodwill gesture this charge has now been waived. It seems to me motorbike insurance is the only insurers to do this when I change my car there is no charge and always a refund for unused policy. The moral of this is that if you sell your bike dont inform the buggars just let the policy run out as I said earlier what a scam

You will probably find that when you change car insurance it's a simple swap over as apposed to cancelling the policy which by the way, if you looked at a breakdown of the payments, refunds etc you would find a cancellation fee hidden in there somewhere ( or it might just show as a missing amount ?? ). With bike insurance it is less likely you would stay with the same insurance broker when you change a bike, and also if you read the small print there is normally something saying about cancellation charges. As an example, when I changed from a 2005 R1 to my 06 FZ1, the broker I was insured with on the R1 would not touch the FZ1, so I had to effectively change insurance companies even though it was all done through Motorcycle direct insurance. I think I went from Equity Red Star to Norwich Union ! Again when I moved to my latest ZX, The same happened again. I lost money on both occasions. Such is the way of insurance, but hell ....... My own friggin fault for changing by bike 6 times in the last 12 months. Just pay the £17. It's annoying but not worth the hassle.
