1.) Assume Drivers Can't See You: Ride assuming that you and your motorcycle are totally invisible to motorists. That means you must never assume that drivers can see you. The odds are, they can't so believe it yourself and always have an "out" for dangerous traffic situations. 2.) Maintain Safe Spacing: Leave plenty of space in front and back and to the sides from all other vehicles. Be an island. Stay away from traffic as much as possible. This gives you more visibility and more time to react to situations. 3.) Anticipate Trouble: Anticipate trouble situations and know what to do when you see them. Analyze what vehicles are doing and try to predict the outcome. Then make sure you're ready to avoid a bad traffic 4.) Beware of Oncoming Left Turners (or right depending in which country you ride in) Beware of oncoming motorists turning (left/right) in front of you at intersections. This is the leading cause of death of motorcycle riders. I'm deadly serious here. I have personally lost many friends to this accident. If you only remember one tip here, let it be this one. Slow down before you enter an intersection. Have an escape route planned. Stay visible. Don't travel too close to cars in front of you. Position your bike so it can be seen by the left/right turner. Eye contact is not enough. 5.) Ride Your Own Ride: Don't try to keep up with your friends who may be more experienced. Know your personal limits. Ride your own ride. 6.) Watch Out for Curves: Beware of taking curves that you can't see around. A parked truck or a patch of sand may be awaiting you. 7.) Don't Give In to Road Rage: Do not give in to road rage and try to "get even" with another rider or motorist. If you follow these tips, most likely you won't fall victim to road rage. It's better to calm down, slow down, and collect your thoughts first. Then continue on and enjoy the ride. That's what we're all out there for in the first place. 8.) Don't allow Tailgating: If someone is tailgating you, either speed up to open more space or pull over and let them pass. Life is too short. Remember that a bike can stop faster than a car so you don't want a truck on your tail when you find yourself trying to brake to avoid an accident. Also, don't tailgate the vehicle in front of you. Oncoming drivers can't see you. 9.) Don't Be Blinded by Sunglare:(N/A in UK & Ire lol ) Beware of riding your motorcycle into sun glare. All it takes is turning a corner and finding the sun either directly in your face or passing straight through your windshield. Some helmets have shields to block the sun. Face shields help somewhat. But sometimes you just find yourself blinded by the light. Slow down, pull over, shield your eyes and look for a way to change direction. 10.) Avoid Riding at Night: Avoid riding at night, especially late Saturday night and early Sunday when drunken drivers may be on the road. It goes without saying that you shouldn't drink and ride. Going bar hopping? Leave the bike at home and find a designated driver. Despite the weather, riding season is not far away and most folk will be getting there bikes into shape for some happy riding - Lets all be here at the end of the year to tell some great stories hey? Ride Safe and enjoy Joe.

riding at night is the one i hate the most , cars seem to not have headlights set properly, i am forever getting dazzled by oncoming traffic. have any of the rest of you noticed these new(ish) lights they have now a really intense blue/white light that is a lot worse (for dazzle) than just plain halogen bulbs.

This probably wont surprise any of you but i've had police tailgating me once. Women nearly running me off the road 3 times. Old people nearly running me off the road twice. Male Wankers tailgating countless times. One Male tosser who drove into my bike on purpose while i was riding it!! Seriously! I came off my bike on Great Homer Street in Liverpool because of oil or Diesel. I came off outside the Womens Hospital in Liverpool City Centre because of oil or Diesel. Ive had a cop pinch me for 3 points and £60 fine at christmas because my rear 'L' Sticker had blown off!!!! FUCKIN WANKER, HOPE HE DIES A PAINFUL DEATH!! and all of that in only a year and a half so i'm off to a good start!!! Driving standards in this country are fucking shite and this has got to be the most anti-biker country in the world and i'm being very fucking serious!!

Feel better for that rookie m8??...........lol....only jokin Ox should take note of ALL the things mentioned there.....I've been out with him and he's a crap motorcyclist!! (if this dont get a rise outta him nothing will) But on a serious note most of the above is common sence.... just a pity the "average" car driver and some motorcyclists haven't got any........... Being an EX Motorcycle Courier i've had my fair share of near misses and offs over the yrs and now i'd like to think that i'm wiser for the experience....(certainly older) Ian

mike....sadly, it is! on a safety note, an air ambulance paramedic m8 of mine made a quote that makes perfect sense, "i ride my bike like its got plastic conrods", and i can assure you, he has seen more blood and bits of human hanging off wreckages than anyone really should see. yeah its true to say that most of the other road users are out to get us one way or another but lets face it folks...... we do ourselves no favours filtering at 50mph+, pulling mingers of wheelies down high streets and scaring the feck out of pedestrians on country roads cos they have the temerity to be walking and that was observed of others whilst i was out on my bike last sunday!
