m8, i'm 6'4" and 200lbs and feel (and probably look) a right muppet on those wee racers. they look good in the mags but sit on one for more than 20 minutes and u'll see what i mean. the above is primarily why i ride big trailies...there's lots of them out there and they accomodate the larger frame.

youll need to pass yer tests first mate . and forget about 600's and 750's cos they is gonna be too cramped for someone your size, i'm six foot and cant be on with the sport bikes due to them being sooooo uncumfertable after anything over 50 miles. but as the saying goes you pay your money and you take your chioce. see if any dealership will offer test rides.

ignore the beast. Get the bike you want and get used to that. whats the point in buying bikes you don't want. Just go and buy what you fancy and try to ride within your capabilities

don't go for a lunatic bke i.e a R1 or GSXR 1000 etc, you'll kill ya self!!! go for something relatively sensible but something u like, and something that you want it to do for instance long distances etc, at the end of the day go with ur gut feeling, i bought a GSXR 600 2001 and i can hardly walk after a day out on it but when you go quick on it its worth every ache and pain

I'm quite new to bikes too. I still ride my first road bike. It's a kawasaki ZZR600 (ZX600 ninja in the USA!) its a sports bike that has been relegated to sports/tourer classification. It is a great first bike, looks nice and is as fast as the newer sports bikes but it is comfortable, cheap to run and insure. They look nice too. I'm 5'10" and find it very comfortable. I've seen guys over 6' ride these as well as women below 5'6". They don't sell them new in the USA anymore (they still do in uk and canada), but you should find some nice used ones. Check out http://www.kawasaki.ca/touring/ZZ-R600/ Anyone disagree wildly?

Oh yeh, forgot to mention. The ZZR600 (zx600) will still do nearly 160 mph. Check out the figures for newer 600's and 750's. They don't come close!

I think you need to find a happy medium between a bike that is comfortable and one you like when you sit on it, and a bike that is safe for a knew rider. I know the area where you live and there is very heavy traffic. I cannot own a sport bike because I would have a need for speed and probably crash. Therefore I have a harley special construction which allows me to go out for a nice ride and just take in the sites. There are a lot of nice cruisers out there that would fit your frame nicely and I think would be a safe ride. Just a thought. Nevertheless, if safty means you have to buy one bike now and another later as you progress in your venture, than so be it. Saftety should always come first. You can always get a bigger faster bike later. Good luck on the shopping.

I know a gixxer will out handle the zzr, the point I was making was that you don't need to but a gixxer, yzf, cbr etc to have blistering performance. The zzr is a great mile muncher but it punches with some of the more sporty bikes. I find the handling excellent, I have no comparison (except a kwaka kx80) though. As a first bike I think it ticks the most boxes, just like a fazer 600 would.

i think im qualified to reply to this post, as a fellow longshanks i can state that you will look a muppet on a smaller bike but a CCm would make an ideal first bike...................and it just happens that i have one for sale
