Drivers who use their phone behind the wheel could face two years in jail under new guidelines.
Motorists caught using MP3 players, fiddling with sat-navs or reading maps could also face jail.
New guidance from the Crown Prosecution Service makes a dangerous driving charge the “starting point” in cases where the behaviour has endangered other road users.
The new guidance also allows the worst cases of causing death by dangerous driving to be prosecuted as manslaughter, which carries a maximum life sentence.
Director of public prosecutions, Sir Ken Macdonald, QC, said: "The revised policy also responds to public concern about the dangers of driving while using a mobile phone and this means that a charge of dangerous driving will now be the starting point for this offence, where there is clear evidence that danger has been caused by its use."
He added: “I think it is right that prosecutors are given new guidance so that where the individual cases warrant it, then a manslaughter charge is selected."

Watched police do nothing when they spotted a woman driving and talking on the phone. Also watched a car go onto opposite carriageway to avoid a traffic jam and cut up a police car and they did nothing. Thats HEAD ON in case you missed it!!!
Probably too scarred they might get some aggravation back if people were that blatant about it.
Coppers are a waste of space now days with all the Health and Safety issues they have to abide to. What's wrong with the old days when a youth who was lippy got a clout around the ear. A thief was nicked and a murderer was put in jail?

not so sure they get paid that much, i wonder if thats the problem, ? used to be a case that becoming a cop meant you had a whole career stretched out ahead of ya with good pay, couple of people i know who are coppers are pretty poorly paid to be honest.

Although I agree with Ox about some police officers not doing things to avoid masses of paperwork and getting it in the neck off their bosses, I have to point out that like most large employers they hire a few useless ***FILTERED WORD*** s. It's a problem in all the emergency services and probably nearly every company in the country.
Look at it like this, You go to work, you do it well and dilligently. All the while the job is being made more difficult by government and the idiots that think criminals should be given the same courtesy as their victims.
You work for a home secratary that renages on a promise while ignoring the recomendations of their own commitee, The imbecile that currently occupies the post of home secratary doesnt know just how close she is to anarchy. By trying to rob officers of a reasonable increase (that is still below inflation by the way) and then staging it as well, in effect stealing approx £200-00 from each officer this year alone, she is pushing the police forces closer to "work to rule"
" work to rule " would mean many community programs would lose the support of the police as many officers put their own time in when off shift. It would mean less policing at public events and less officers volunteering to do overtime to cover illness.
It's a step away from strike action, and if the police strike everyone loses, simple as that. The police undertook a commitment not to strike and lost the right to protest the rest of us have and the goverment is taking the piss messing with their money.
The other group of employeees waiting on pay rises are the police civilian staff, many work in posts doing work that is critical to the smooth running of any force, This group do have the right to strike and if their pay winds up being staged by the Home secratary, and strike they will.
That folks is the end game, you dont even need the police on strike to cripple the institution just the civvie staff.
The government has spent that much time and effort on helping america save the world they have lost sight of the problems in our own country.
Now then, Driving while useing a hand held phone.
Stupid thing to do I think. It does distract from driving and you do need to think about the consequenses. I work on the basis that if I ignore the phone and concentrate on driving the caller will get back to me or leave a message.
Iv'e even seen folk fekkin texting while driving, thats just lunacy in my book and they should have the book thrown at them, a big one.
Most of my mates are either disabled bikers or know one and not all but a fair ol few have been injured due to the inattention of other road users. I mean, how can you possibly see a bike coming if you are texting?
If the law states that you should go to jail for causing death by dangerous driving or driving without due care and attention then jail it should be.
If it were down to me I'd spend less in forign aid and fighting pointless bloody wars and pay all out public servants more, coppers, Fire men and wimmin, paramedics and ambulance crews, nurses and teachers. Unfortunatly I'm not and things will not be changed by this rant either , but at least i've got it off my chest.

this country of ours is f***ed and heading down the toilet fast, we have a government that thinks if there is a problem then if they legislate against it all will be well but the problem is as has already been stated, the police are scared to pull people up for infringing the laws because of all the bull ***FILTERED WORD*** rules that are in place to ensure the criminals get a fair deal...... its crap.....
