thought I'd just say to everyone, I've just registered and looking to make some friends and grab any advice you wanna give me. I only passed my CBT a couple of months back and been riding for a fortnight so still a little unsure of myself, i was bought up on the back of my dad's bike so I know a little about it but still getting used to being in control! went out and treated myself to a suzuki intruder 125 which i love, finding it a little terrifying and totally fabulous, plan on doing my full test next spring as I don't fancy doing it in the winter. Not sure how I feel about winter riding actually, how many of you guys do it and what do you think? I'm guessing it's not recommended but how feesable is it?

righto, lotty welcome. first off.... well done on choosing two wheels (you know it makes sence). the intruder 125 is a good choice of 1st bike and will do you well.
WINTER RIDING: yes you can ride through the winter. do yourself a favour though and make sure you have decent waterproofs, better yet get some good riding gear (cordura with armour) good waterproof gloves are a good bet also, (as are handlebar muffs.... they may look naff but you'll have warm hands and they are easy to take off too). if its blowing a gale and slinging down rain like theres no tommorow theres nothing that says you HAVE to go out on the bike....
I ride all year round, i go to rallies in winter and camp out when its snowing as well but then im daft. with a bit of common sence you too can ride all year round and you will get used to being cold... nowt better than getting home and getting warm again.
feel free to ask advice on here as folk will no doubt give you plenty just remember you dont have to take that advice but if you choose to and you have a good time remember someone else gave you the heads up.
wishing you many happy years of biking and all it holds. and always remember BIKERS HAVE MORE FUN THAN PEOPLE!

Hiya Lotty, welcome on board.
Glad you got a bike and plan to pass your test soon.
Bear said it all, wise words.
If you do ride through the winter remember to clean your bike regurly, salt will do loads of corrosive damage.
Have fun, ride safe.

dont bother with muffs, split a plastic bottle down the middle and cable tie the halves to your bars. cheaper and dont get nicked...

hi lotty. well done on passing your cbt. i ride through winter and what bear says is right, u need warm and waterproof gear. i don't like riding in ice, did it once, fell off and cracked 2 ribs!! the only adivce i can give really is take your time in bad weather, always leave early so u don't have to rush, give yourself plenty of breaking time, always carry a mobile phone and try and stay warm especially on long trips, getting cold can affect your concentration.
oh and last thing......
have fun

Hiya Lotty
I ride all year round cos I can't work cars. You just have to be very slow and careful if its icy or better still stay at home. You can never overestimate how cold you're going to get so wear everything you can get your hands on, splash out on long johns, decent gloves and get one of them snood things. They look ***FILTERED WORD*** ty but its surprising how quick your lips ice up.
Be careful in strong wind, it can get weird if its blustery. Never ceases to scare the sh!t out of me.
Thats all I have to say about that.
Congrats on the CBT pass and good luck with the test. Its probably a good idea to do it in warmer weather for comfort reasons if nothing else.
You'll find that you never want to ride pillion ever again. Somehow it gets really scary once you've learned to ride.
It'll change your life, I guarantee it. Bikes is the bestest things ever. Wehey!

hi and welcome to the site. im not far from you, live in beccles, so if you ever up this way give us a shout. i ride all year round, and its just the cold thing really, once you get cold you will lose concentration, then its gonna get dangerous, very quickly. latex gloves worn under your gloves help keep the hands warm , without losing feel, and wear several thin layers rather than just one thick one, you will find this keeps the heat in. thermal long johns, not to sexy, but do a good job on long trips. just take it easy, and enjoy.

i passed my direct acess in november a few years ago (well 6 to be precise) and i think if you pass in winter you seem to appreciate summer that little bit more
i know i do.
i once rode bout 50 miles in the pouring rain with a pair of white leather summer gloves and the dye ran off the gloves and stained me hands i look back and laugh bout it now but i was gutted at the time as i was goin to a biker weekend and had stained hands the whole blooody time
but you live and learn
anyway good luck passing ya test and welcome to the best way of life
2 wheels, full tank and a twisty road

thanks for all the advise guys I'll keep it in mind, I've done a couple of rides in the wet and that wasn't as bad as i expected though i think i need one of those visor wiper things! I am loving the whole 2 wheeled thing....would be loving it more if my bike was working properly mind you, got it in to be fixed next week.
well i'm off for dinner, hope everyone's well
