just a thought, what should we be doing for new riders to encourage them to be a bit more sensible about their choice of bike and riding?.as has been stated on other threads there are people giving riders a bad name by having accidents that shouldnt have happened.personally whenever i take a new un out,i slow down a lot, tell em to ride for theirselves and not try to keep up and try to encourage them as much as i can.perhaps we should start before they buy a bike though.perhaps we should advise them to buy a bike more suited to a new rider than some of the race rep missiles people buy as a first ride.i think we can all agree that we have to do something as some good meets are being closed down cos some muppets are turning up and crashing or stunting within feet of large crowds.if we dont do something, the police will.old dickie boy will be proved right and limiters will be next.your thoughts.........

I agree Sozzle, maybe there should be a list of superbikes that you can't ride in your first year of riding or something like that? That said, if I bought an R1 after my test I would still have rode sensibly, because I know a lot of bikers who've died through being stupid. A lot of the time it's about what's between the bikers ears, not their legs!!

Soz I used to work in a bike shop and you can tell trainee's till you're blue in the face that a CB500 or 600 Bandit would be a better option than the latest 'Blade or R1 that they've got their heart set on but it's like talking to a brick!
Same goes for advising them to buy the best kit they can afford and you still see them riding around in jeans/trainers/no gloves/t-shirts/shorts etc.
For the bikes there should bring back the limit of what you can ride until you have 2 yrs experience under your belt, a week DAS course is not sufficient to stop these lemmings killing themselves!

SmileySal and work should not be mentioned in the same sentence.......lmao
training is the answer, not only for the the new new riders but also for those, and we all know some, who think they are the dogs on a bike, but in truth have been very lucky to reach this stage in thier life.......

I don't think imposing size or power limits for new riders is the answer. If someones just gone through the trauma of getting a test pass they have every right to ride whatever they like. Anybody with an ounce of sense wouldn't jump straight on their first bike and start riding like a bellend anyway, no matter what the bike is. Besides that, you can kill yourself just as easily on a 250.
Its the lack of common sense that needs addressing. Ever tried to tell a 19 year old anything? Remember when you were 19, would you have taken any advice on how to ride your brand new rice rocket from some old fart in their mid-thirties? Its a tricky one.
As for the gear, doesn't everyone fall off once or twice when they're learning to ride? Once should be enough to get the massage through that if you fall off in your t-shirt its going to hurt a bit. If someone has the sense to learn to ride and pass their test but still can't manage to wear decent gear, nothing I say is going to help them.

17 yrs old, saved up bought a brand new 125 ( just before the 125 law and still the single test) went despatch riding with no knowledge crashed a lot, a lot more lost me thumb thru stupidity.
Experience has taught me a lot and one of those learning curves has taught me what keech is saying, no matter what you tell new riders they will still ***FILTERED WORD*** up. The born again ones whom think getting on a R6 let alone a R1 and think its like their old CB750 or wotever are the ones in with a damn big shock.
Any rider will try to see what it does in the red line in every gear, its human nature. To do it with minimum danger to others is preferred or on a track day but not during school hours with children about!!!!!
Basically think about your surrounding and ride to their safety is the best advise i can offer for newbies. And ENJOY.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, beer in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming
