Avast anti-virus offers a free home edition, you just need to register it for the updates (which is free).
Spybot Search & Destroy does a decent job removing spyware, and also allows you immunize your system from further attacks. (If you google it, don't click on the sponsored link, 'www.spyboot.com') Spybot also comes with 'TeaTimer' which runs in memory scanning for spyware, although i dont use this feature.
If you use mozilla firefox for browsing, you can download an add-on call 'AdBlock Plus', which allows you to manually tell the browser to block specific urls. A bit of work to begin with, adding urls as they pop up, but once you've got most of them entered, browsing becomes a pleasure. Also allows you to export the url list in case you have to reload again :)

Go to norton or one of the other big ones and just download quick fix removal tools that might help things speed up.
