I have just come across a guy who plates chrome/steel parts on bikes with 24k GOLD. He lives somewhere in Kent but came to me and did it. How weird is that - I had some of my HD plated and it looks cool. Has anyone heard of this before Twee

Gold plating on bikes is fairly rare but not unheard of, but for the bloke to turn up at your house to do it is (unless i missunderstood ). Would think that Gold plating wont last all that long though unless its protected with some sort of barrier.

i used to do electro plating , as a living, you can diy it , basiccally you just need a plastic bucket and a battery! and some nasty chemicals! but you cant get much thickness if you do it at home!(a thin coat of zinc or cad is still usually better than nothing!) it'll just be 'flashed' if he came to you, nice, but fairly thin coat.

unless that is, he came to you , took the stuff away then brought it back, lol! still be thin tho a few microns 300 quid an ounce gold is! and doubt if it was 24 carat!

That was my point, its expensive and unless done properly will be susceptible to stone chips ect. Doing it "roadside" is not going to be very good.
