After just passing my test i have just bought an old gsx550 something to ease me into big bikes. the starter does not work on the electric start following the previous owner jump starting it with a portable jump start machine, but it will bump start and run. Im a bit passed it running with a big bike to start it. anyway i was told by 1 mechanic that the starter solenoid was goosed so i replaced it and its still doing the same when u press start all that happens is the starter solenoid clicks, nothing happens to the starter motor. I have looked for a downloadable tech manual but found nothing. the only thing stopping the starter motor coming out of the housing now is the carbs above, but i have no idea how to remove the carbs as i am not mechanically minded but can follow instructions any 1 got any advice on how to remove the carbs so i can sort this starter motor out. (sensible ideas only please) mate told me a big hammer and chisel should do it lol. Many thanks Jay

First off have a look at the job . logicaly. dissconnect the throttle cable and pull em out the way, (dont pull em too hard just enough to get them out yer way). Next. there may be some sort of clips attaching the carb rears to the air box, dissconnect em. next.pull the carbs away from the inlet manifolds they should now come clear of the bike and be connected to nothing (take the time to give em a good clean inside and out). now your starter motor should be easy to remove. get a mecahnic to check and see if it works before spending money replacing it. If its had it, get a refurbed or second hand one, refit. reasemble the carbs and put em back, reconect the cables and bob should be yer aunties live in lover... or not. bike electrics can be real bastids!
