I suppose u have all heard about the shootings in the USA, do we think that people been able to have guns is the right thing to do when this sort of stuff happens? I know u could get one ilegally and still go round killing people but it makes it alot hard to get hold of one in the first place if they aint legal surely? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6562259.stm

Its dreadful isnt it...No it cant be good. How do you reverse it? I cant even imagine a gun culture here its bad enough with knives..I cant think about it its way too scary . Was listening to someone on the radio today and he said we are now living in a very dangerous world and we all have to take responsibility for our own safety..Poor Bertie and Sandies generation.

I used to have guns until this piss-ass nanny state took away my right to have them. It boils my piss the fact that just because some halfwhit decided to go and kill a bunch of kids I loose my right to enjoy my passtime. Now we have this 'LAW' that says no more guns the law abiding folks like myself have to go without while the criminal scum can get their dirty hands on firearms so easily its unreal. I can see the day coming when some drugged up piece of filth breaks into my home waving a 9mm automatic in my face demanding money and by some stroke of luck I knock his gun out his hand and then bash him over the head with it and send for the law, then the best part will be where I get done for asault and more than like also end up paying chummy compensation. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr get me outa here before I go nuts!!!!

In answer to the real question, I do not agree with people being able to personally own any weaponry. It all stems from "Wars", if people throughout the world could communicate properly we wouldn't need to worry about this type of crap i.e. killing people for their religion's sake, killing themselves because nobody cared enough to help, etc, etc. You would have thought that the Americans would've learnt by now, to change their gun policies.... how many times has this sort of thing happened before? Only done it a couple of times but I love clay pidgeon shooting, although saying that I always feel uneasy when doing it because you don't know if the person in the que behind you as as sound-minded as you. The first time I done it, one of the men who was running said that he had only just got his license back after somebody killed themself (on purpose) with one of his guns on group outing! I think that most of the problems we have Internationally are due to lack of communication, people not really caring like they used to and broken families. Sad but true (imo anyway).

a gun is just a tool its the people who use them wrongly that are at fault. anyone who wants a gun badly enough can apparently get one here so its the law abiding citizens who used to enjoy a sport and are now denied that who suffer. should we ban cars or bikes because more people are killed by them than guns. and the pro lobby in america is saying that if the students had been carrying they could have defended themselves. dunno is my point

Guns dont kill people .People kill people! Tis an odd fact that Canada has a similar level of guns per head of population but only a tiny fraction of gun crime such as we have recently seen on telly. The Pro gun lobby has indeed said had the students at the college been allowed to carry guns then the chances are that there would have been fewer deaths as someone would have shot the nutter. Now Im not a pro gun person by any stretch of the imagination, I dont buy into the crap about handguns being a target weapon (bollox.... a handgun has one use and that is to kill other human beings.) Dosnt matter if a few folk use a handgun to go hunting or let fly at some paper targets, fact is the weapon is designed to shoot another human being! Having said that there are definatly human beings that deserve to be shot and put out of our misery, but the problem is if you allow folk to own guns then someone sometime is gonna decide they are going to kill a few folk. The phrase "going postal" for instance comes from when the post office in the US would every so often pay off employee's and the employee would turn up at the office and shoot folk for being sacked. it happened a few times hence the saying. Humans in general are not the most emotionally stable things, piss the wrong one off and find out! There is no chance that the US will ever ban guns. it simply isnt possible. All they can do is to make it much more difficult to get a licence for one. Even then, lets face it folk who want one will get one.As long as big business wants to have a market then guns will remain on sale. It makes no difference if thats a good idea or not. Over here the hysteria is about knives these days , thing is there are more illegal guns on the street now than ever before. The gov will no doubt make knives illegal too , as in no excuses you have one in public yer going to jail. maybe thats a good thing perhaps not. In the long run however making knives illegal will not cut the number of stabbings because as we all know there are always going to be folk willing to use a knife for whatever reason. I beleive that government should probably do less making laws and more enforcing the ones they already have. There is far too much of the feeling of The Nanny State in this country these days. So are guns a good idea or not? i dont know, but right or wrong they are here to stay and i would sooner have the choice of owning one than not. after all it would be better to own one and never use it than to need one and not have access to it.

If a complete tit is intent on killing someone - they'll find a way to do it - guns or no guns. Dangerous idiots will always be around and they'll use anything from a toothpick to a coke can to hurt someone. Cars can kill people and they let complete dick heads out in those when it's obvious that they're irresponsible from the outset. I enjoy shooting................at paper targets. I never ever want to kill anything or anyone, I just like the sport of it and the skill involved.

guns are withint the us constitution and their 2nd ammendment, basically guarantees the right to posses firearms to individuals. it is part of their way of life, i heard earlier on one person over there saying that if all the students had been carrying weapons then it would have been fine....how that works im not sure. Personally i love shooting, i used to shoot competivly, from the age of about 13, with various weaponry, i love it to pieces, a weapon I.E rifle pistol, is a tool in the same way a car or bike are tools, all of which can be used as a deadly weapon. it is the individual uusing them that makles them dangerous, i have great respect for weaponry and have been taught how to use and control it correctly. Yes it only takes one individual to decide their going to do something like this, but unfortunately sometimes people are driven to do bad and awful things. In the right instance i beleive it is right to have weapons, over here i dont beleive it is as practical soley because we dont ave as many wide open spaces as the states do. I personally beleive the problem is not having weapons, but is policing the gun control laws.

Just my personal opinion ... Firearms in relation to Civilian use. 1) A gun as a tool related to sport is in controlled circumstances i'd say is ok. 2) A gun as a tool used for hunting is in the right circumstances is ok as long as the user understands the impact on the environment/wildlife and is able to act accordingly and not selfishly. 3) A gun as a tool for Killing/Threatening another human being is NOT ACCEPTABLE! If you wish to argue that in defence it is acceptable then unfortunately if someone wishes to, they will kill you. You more than likely wont have much chance. If your talking about some kinda duel/stand-off situation ie "Hey mate look at the size of this Vulcan Cannon stuffed down my shorts" then im sorry you are no more than a criminal yourself, As already stated 'Threatening'. If its a standoff then i'd hope that common sense would prevail, back off and live aniother day. This maybe seems unfair but if its a blatent rule then, if your holding gun then expect no less than an authorised official to to remove you from existance. These rules should apply to public places. That in itself should also work for idiots who carry imitation guns. Imitation guns should be regarded as a gun used for the purpose of threatening. All such rules regarding firearms id say should definately apply to public places. This is my get out clause for maybe allowing for non working replicas, licenced firearms holders etc having weapons in there homes for use or viewing in private. I believe this is the only way. Sorry but the human being is at times violent and doesnt need modern technology to assist. Having said that I like the idea that for the most part the society i live in is on the whole despite media hype reasonably stable ... allowing guns in public places would threaten the social stability our culture / civilisation has achieved.

As the first American to reply to this, I have to agree with the founders of our country. As it states in our constitution, we have the right to bear arms. Unfortunatly, this right is often abused. The criminals abuse it, as well as some of our elected officials restrict the honest citizens from our constitutional rights. But hey, what do I know. I'm still in favor of "life in prison with hard work" for murder, child abuse, and rape. The penalty should be so great that nobody would ever consider such a horendous crime. What happened was wrong. If there were no guns in the country, the crazies would find another means to kill. People who abuse this right should be punished accordingly.

Just a different take on this situation from my side of the world. Getting a gun license used to be relatively easy here. Then our wise government (sarcasm) decided that guns where bad, and so they made it a lot more difficult to get a license. The criminals, however, don't care and get guns illegally. When every second guy had a license, and was carrying a gun, the criminals thought twice about pulling a gun on somebody, because they usually got a gun pointed at them in return. Now that few people have guns, there is no more fear for the criminals, and the first thing they do now is pull out a gun, and shoot at any resistance. From that point of view, allowing the average man on the street to own a gun, can act as a strong deterrent to the criminals, making them reconsider pulling out a gun.
