Waste of electricity. Equipment on standby. Just checked as i`m messing about..... so far i have found two mobile phones one blue tooth headset. One tv, video (yes still have one of them) DVD player, Stereo, digital receiver, playstation. Wireless phone network this contraption, a laptop on charge. Then the kitchen, microwave, washing machine, combi boiler. Agggggg boys room, two mobile chargers not unplugged. Glad my fridge and freezer is low consumption.............. All the above is lil`ole me, what's your mess like? How exactly will they implement a "no standby" policy on goods? It would be like going back to having to physically wind down your car windows!!!!!! Get up to change channels????? Never, we didn't do that did we? Okies youngsters shut it right now :P Then there is the idea of dimming street lighting, bound to encourage more nocturnal activity with the hooded brethren!!! A council tried once to turn lights off after 1 am, after a months trail it was more expensive to pay the people to do the switching on and off than leave the lights on overnight!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Discuss................???

Ox, I do believe that they will be outlawing the 'standby' function on all such appliances, thereby forcing you to manually turn them off. I actually tried to turn my tv off properly, and the only way to do it is switch it off at the plug, which is ok if it's accessible. Unfortunately, mine wasn't! The general consensus is that a tv on standby costs in the region of £70 extra per year, perhaps if people realised this, they would be more inclined to switch off

It really depends what proportion of 24 hours you would normally watch tv for ox. If you watched it say for 4 hours, then leave it on standby for 20, it ain't gonna make a lot of difference in your leccy bill. If you turned it off at the plug on the other hand, it would make a huge difference. I don't have any evidence of how much it costs to leave things on standby, the £70 is just what a lecturer quoted to us, as well as some bloke I heard on the radio. Who am I to argue with them?! One thing is for sure, if everything is left on standby, or plugged in, phone chargers etc. as you so rightly mentioned, then it soon adds up

Dunno, but if you feel the charger it is warm. Well known that they still use leccy, even though not charging anything

A charger with a transformer in it always draws power...a small amount if nothing is hooked up to the other end. transformer= a device that will change the higher voltage in your house to a lower voltage that the device that needs charging needs. Standby (instant on) tv or computer monitor= Power stays applied to keep the electron filliments (things that make the little dots light up) warm. So when you want to watch the tube.... its ready for you. Otherwise it takes a little bit of time to warm up. Hope this helps some... bob
