I have both leathers and textiles, very good both of them, i also have a few pairs of draggin jeans, although th minimum i ride in is my full textiles, normally with a pair of my draggins underneath and boots gloves etall etc, for no ther reason than i wear them alot and their comfortable.
A few years ago i had an off on my cbr6 fairly low speed was entirely my mistake, car pulled out on me i panic braked on some gravel, and hit the deck doing about thirty. the kerb kindly caught me and stopped me pretty quickly. full impact being on my knee which had allready been injured. The physios and doctors/surgeons i dealt with at the time said if i had not been wearing my leathers, then i wouldnt have had a knee cap left. simple as that. which was a wake up call...
i dnt agree with people riding without gear but it is their choice, one of the things that makes Great Britain, Great is soley that we have choices and are allowed to make our own mind up on alot of things. anybody read Bike magazine alot? remeber MFG accident from last year on a daytona 675? he was wearing jeans, and there were quite a few letter wrote in obviously too about the subject.....Point being its is your own preference. you do it knowing full well what the risks are, if your going to accpet them then dont bitch about it afterwards if it goes wrong...........

Risk compensation is not a bigoted theory but a fully applied scientific one.
When crash helmets were made compulsary in the 70's the accident figures went up as did the amount of fatalities.
When seat belts were made compulsary the statistics went up again! (though in the incidence of cars lives were saved. The government still wont release the details of wether helmets saved any lives or indeed wether they contributed to injury!.funny that.)
Volvo cars are advertised as being safe for the driver and passenger funnily enough they are involved in more accidents.
On the last bank holiday we had there were several motorcyle rider fatalities up here (sadly), all bikes involved were Sports bikes, riders were wearing full leathers .
"excessive speed was the overwelming factor in the accidents" to qoute local plod.
its not just a case of riding like a Twa* bubs .Surely you can see that believing yourself safe/protected will lead to risk taking.
Me i havnt had an off in the last 23 years (not counting the low speed one cos of tourists all thinking a road was a footpath as there was no injury to me or the bike). I dont hang around either but i know my limits, i have lost count of the times when i have been overtaken by some numpty in dayglow leather jim jams only for me to wizz past him through a set of twisties. Wearing leather wont save your life! nor will wearing cordura, it may or may not save you from gravel rash and yer expensive lid may or may not save your skull (to date no helmet manufacturer will guarentee their product in any accident above 30mph!).
Wear what you like but at the end of the day thinking/believing that wearing top of the ranch kit will save you is a clear example of risk compensation in action!
I ride upward of 20,000 miles a year in all weathers and conditions its not about luck its about being able to read the road and know(almost instinctivly) what the other road users will do or attempt to do.

Wear what you want but accept the consequences of little or no protection. You loose and inch of skin for every 100 yards you slide down the road without protection. As for bears comments re dayglo leathers just a point I wore a bright blue leather suit which did happen to match my bike the yellow col, ouring matched my riding LOL but its a fact that bright leathers are more noticable to car drivers then the all black leather garb. I used to ride a lot till I had to give up because of my shoulder problem and have ridden in all weathers I also have my IAM and various bike safe passes that did not make me impervious to numptys or my own mistakes. Just ride safe and be as protected as you can Gravel rash is very painful. We shouldnt generalise about what we ride or what we wear and be tolerant of each and everyone. I personally hate the term Power Ranger and can see nothing wrong with matching leathers if thats your particular thing. Long hair and tattoo's dont make you a biker neither does 46 on your bike or back make you rossi. Be like the
scouts "Be Prepared" when on your bike and ride safe

In 4 yrs despatch riding I always wore leathers, the best I could afford, so they were Lewis Leathers. Not many are made to their quality nowadays. Boots were moto x ones and gloves again Lewis ones. I was knocked off on several occasions ( life expectancy then for a DR was 4 yrs). Each time the leathers saved me, on one occasion the hospital cut them off me, there were more shouts about that than the injuries I had!!!
No professional rider ever works without leathers, even in the summer. We have seen too many "holiday Despatchers" Return to uni or where ever with no skin left and marks for life.
No matter how good you perceive your riding or do more miles than most there will always be a close shave or worse. Even averaging over 100 000 miles a year i never considered myself to be the best, there are shed loads better than me, but you tend to see a bit more about your surroundings as Bear says.

Bearo, as I said approx 45% of accidents are down to rider error, it would be interesting to find out what the percentage of sportsbikes on the road are too in comparison to cruisers, etc
The accident rate goes up, the hotter the weather, there are less accidents in the rain than on a clear day too. What does this tell you? A - More bikes go out in the sunshine and B - People concentrate more when there are more dangers
People buy sportsbikes mainly because they like to ride a bike that handles well and push themselves (hopefully not beyond their limits), pushing these boundaries doesn't always mean lunacy. And fatalities are not always down to speed (or even the bike you ride or whether your leather match the bike) but also braking, cornering, not concentrating, etc, something that we all get wrong occasionally.
If people buy leathers to match their bikes, that is their choice. Personally my leathers cost me £350, textiles £200, boots £140, gloves £80 and lid £290, again this is my choice and I chose all of my kit for it's durability, safety and cost effectiveness. If I had the money and if I was the right size damn right I'd go out and spend a fortune on matching kit, although I am happy with my lot.
All types of two-wheelers have accidents surely we should be sticking together as "Motorcyclists" rather than debating what type of rider has the most accidents?
Rather than turn this into a type for type bike competition maybe we should get back to the original subject.
I think the general consensous is that most people wouldn't go out without good protective clothing on, and those who aren't bothered feel it's their choice to ride in whatever they want.
I think I've said enough now, and I'm afraid that if I say anymore I will say things that I may later regret lol

I must admit i'm with u on this one bubbs I fail to see how what bike u ride or whether your outfit matches it or not has anything to do with the fact that if u slide down the road in only jeans and a t-shirt u r going to lose skin .......... FACT!!!!!!
There is no arguing that point it WILL happen, if u choose to ignore that and wear the said jeans and t-shirt then good look i hope they can take enough skin off your arse for the skin graphs you'll need.

That is of course if there's enough skin on your arse to do anything with it!
ty roeby good to know that someone else agrees.
It's a crazy world and I think that some peoples comments have only highlighted their ignorance and selfishness to themselves and others.

Bubbs! wear what you like. ride what you like. I know i would rather ride in a pack of custom bikes than with the go faster race rep brigade. Why cos the race rep riders mostly dont have a bloody clue. they treat the road like a race track! the fatalities round here in cumbria are mostly folk on race reps (occaisionally a ped /scooter rider.). You can call me bigoted (you have twice already) and you can call me ignorant and selfish as much as you like. i will still be out there on my bike enjoying myself. It seems you cannot construct an argument without making it a personal issue. I at no point suggest that folk should ride in tshirts and trainers or whatever nor do i suggest they should wear full leather suits (the cordura and kevlar stuff is way better than leather at abrasion resistance anyway....dosnt look as nice though does it?) wear what you like . im not about to call you anything because of your choices, nor am i going to bleat about the consequences of MY actions. I may have an accindent tommorow but chances are i wont, why? cos i read the road and i ride within my limits at all times. i dont ride the best handling bikes on the road and i dont hang about but most importantly i dont ride like a twa*. my opinions of sport bike riders wont change, there are some that are very capable and there are some that shouldnt be alowed to drive a nail into a bit of wood never mind a bike with more bhp than their IQ. The same can be said of all riders/drivers.

Bear from my experience in the guys who tend to ride customs, old classic retro bikes etc, you guys have mostly been riding along time, and so far i havnt met any one that hasnt been able to teach me something or make me a better ride even just lil tips bout reading the road. for instance im one of the youngest if not the youngest at my local iam group. i ride a race rep i wear leathers, dont matter to me is only because i really love the look of them same as how i appreciate classic bikes and the lines. i wouldnt say your bigoted atall, or anything as such, is our life we should be able to live it how we want to. if it upsets some people then so be it, bear not all of us race rep riding power rangers,(thats me saying that!!) are all idiots, but your opinion comes from your own experience, ive seen some and ridden with some who are to say the least a very bad example......and i agree with you the majority do use the road as a race track ill admit i have in the past, but ive wised up to that and discovered what trackdays are really for..
each to their own wear what ya want!
even if its just y fronts and a hairy chest:D
