As racism seems to be the topic of the moment I thought I would ask this question. Jade Goody is getting loads of grief over her poppadom comments and others in reference to Shilpa, who thinks that Jermaine Jacksons comments were racist when he referred to Jades mum as 'White Trash'.

I agree that it is in the interpretation of what is and isnt racist! I think some of the things said were indeed racist, because they singled out someone of a different race. The reasons for doing it I feel were petty jealousy and the like, but regardless of what the reasoning was they still did it! And no i dont think that JJs comments were racist as my understanding of White trash in the states is more a class thing than a racial description. Its like us talking about the Gypsys we look down on them! Well most of us do! However im not supporting the whole political correctness thing, over here ive been lucky enough to be raised respecting both sides of the community and can enter into banter with friends from both sides without worry or upset! But put yourself into the situation of being the only one getting the comments directed at you and it isnt fun anymore! Take care all xxxxxxxxxx

There's a quote from a clever bugger type philosopher chappy that translates roughly as "have no truck with any "ism"".
All "isms" seek to group people together and attribute behavioural characteristics to their subjects without any consideration for the humanity of that person; sexism, racism, facism, religious fundamentalism, marxism, you name it they do it.
I think that until we all can look at someone and see a human in all their flawed glory irrespective of sex, sexual orientation, creed, colour etc. then isms will continue to flourish.
Before you leap to judgement of someone based on their appearance (Which, let's face it, is the basis of it all) think one of these thoughts:
"I wonder what their Mum thinks of them?"
"I wonder if they want the best for their children?"
"Do they like to sing in the bath?"
I was shocked to discover that I am still plagued by racialist thinking when "little Miss Joscelyn" came on the telly. I EXPECTED all the jokes to be based on race, just because the principal performer / writer happened to be black; admittedly some were but the realisation that I expected them to be came as a bit of a shot from the blue, I realised that even perfect little me still had some nasty baggage from the 1970's in my suitcase.
I realised a while back that people fall into four camps;
1) people you like
2) people you can tolerate for short periods
3) people you don't like
4) people you haven't met yet
I said on another post (quite some time ago) that if someone treats you badly then they do that because they're an arsehole and not because they're white or black or protestant or Pakistani or gay or a traveller or even a Conservative.
I recommend to you all the Reverend Martin Luther King's speech "I have a dream", read or listen to it again and imagine it spoken by one of your countrymen / co-religionists or change the words black and white for whatever your particular bugbear is. It's a powerful statment of desire for a better world and can come down as low as Cameron's "Hug a hoody" bollocks.
Remember, at the end of the day we are all human and love someone, even if it only ourselves.
To end, a mangled quote from Robert Heinlein "Always remember that your enemy is not an evil person in his own eyes. This realisation may allow you to reach a compromise with him in the future (or at least kill him quickly and without hatred)".
Here endeth the lesson for today

Dr king was a great speaker though if you do a bit of digging he was far from the saintly man he made himself out to be..... he never gained his doctorate from any university (self appointed as was his reverand tag). he had a fondness for white prostitutes ( like a lot of real god botherers in the states) and was funded by the russians apparently. The king family have had his dossier sealed , no one can look at the file, make of that what you will.
Its ironic that a man of peace (and i do believe he was that at least) should have so many streets named for him , and that those streets in american cities are known as very dangerous places to be.
comedian chris rock was phoned by a friend (who was white) to ask for directions...
"where are you " enquired rock.
"Im on martin luther king avenue, what do you advise?" replied his friend
"i advise running like a mother fuc****" was his reply.
It would appear that kings famous speech about all being equal fell on deaf ears in his own community, which is a shame really.
the reality of racism is simple. it will always be there. think about it. untill the day someone is described as a man or a woman rather than a black (or for that matter brown yellow or white) man/woman then racism has its fuel.

Feet of clay Bear but like you say it never stopped him pushing for integration and peace.
You're right about there never truly being an end to racism because in the end we all carry baggage from our pasts but perhaps we can hope that it becomes as insignificant as the way that some people have a thing against beards or others distrust people with limp hand shakes.
