Time travel theory states that if you went back in time and killed one of your ancesters prior to that ancester having a child then you would cease to exist. however if you cease to exist then you couldnt have gone back in time to do the deed! tis called a paradox.
Also if you went back in time and you died in the past then you would eventually be born again and do the same things in your life and create another type of paradox (a time loop).
all in all travelling to the past is/would be fraught with danger and travelling to the future couldnt be done (exept if you count cryogenic's) as the future hasnt happend yet there would be no point in time to travel too.

If our ancestors didnt climb out during the early ice age we would not be here.

the future exists but only as an abstract as it hasnt happend yet for instance tommorow you could be crossing the road and get hit by a bus, or a bike or a car or a chicken or maybe you would reach the other side of the road unharmed. the future would have to have an infinate number of possibilities. meaning that travel to the future would have to be uncertain at best. It would be handy to be able to nip to next week for instance and get the results of various sports travel back and make a fortune though, but then the next week that i visit would only be one of an infinate number of possibilities and so the results may or may not be usefull.
right my head hurts now! i reckon its altogether safer to live in the now.
