Here's a thought from Benjamin Franklin:
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
Discuss.

Nope, .........I really don't see a pattern here to justify
profiling, do you? So, to ensure democratic western Christian
civilisation never offends anyone - particularly fanatics intent on
killing us - airport security screeners will no longer be allowed to
profile (or target)certain people. They must only conduct random
searches of 80-year-old women, people in wheelchairs, little kids,
airline pilots with proper identification, Secret Service agents
who are members of the U.S.President's security detail, 85-year old
World War II veterans with metal hips, and Boy Scout groups. They
must never "target" a 17 to 40 year old male who appears to have
a suspicious package tied around his body. This would be
unjustified discrimination!
and how aout this little gem from the powers that be in scotland
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/5288184.stm
and yet another
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
eco friendly houses being built specially for the asian community have been unveiled in greater manchester,
the £3,000,000 project comprises of 18 state of the art
houses,in selwyn close, oldham. They have wind turbines/solar panels on the roof,up to 7 dedrooms, that face away from mecca and the kitchens comply with cruel and sadistic practice of halal,
ministers have reportedly backed 3 pilot schemes under which firms bidding for public contractswould be quizzed on their attitudes towards race, and have ethnic quotas enforced,,,
makes you wonder dosnt it? i dont see any council activity to build house's for the indiginous peoples of this country (ie us). and how come its ok for folk of certain religions to go on protest marches and proclaim on their banners "death to the unbeliever" and "kill those who say islam is violent"(my own particular favourite piece of ironic writing that one). and yet the procurator fiscal issues a warning to a football player for crossing himself.
all in all this country is being given away our way of life is threatened by all and sundry and yet the people do nothing for fear of being labeled a racist.
f**k em .

Funny, I started this as a shout against increasing government interference in our lives and it has turned into a rant against immigrants post.
Colours on the mast, I was a big supporter of the ANL back in the the 70s/80s and thought that I could retire from all that but like a dose of the shits after a bad oyster, here they come again. Anyone who starts a sentence "I'm not a racist" and then follows it with "but" needs to take a long hard look at themselves.
Those coming over here today are to read the posts above, a bunch of idle dole scroungers intent on taking all our jobs (Eh?) if you want better treatment become an immigrant (was single mothers a while back as I recall).
Instead of regurgitating the 8ollox you read in the papers get out there and try to meet people, yes they pray funny and eat weird food, that's the way they were brought up; have any of you considered the presbyterian church or haggis lately? They don't want to learn our language or adopt our culture and live only with their own kind (Seen the way UK expats in Spain live? Anyone?)
They cut the prices charged by our honest (Hah!) hardworking (Workshy!) tradesmen (My apologies to you if you are the one who actually sticks to his quote, doesn't take a 4 week holiday in the middle of a job, finishes on time and doesn't leave the place looking like a bombsite - P.S. send me your number, I've got a job for you!). Who gladly pays the low prices? Who thanks FCUK that they've finally managed to get a plumber/electrican/builder to do a job of work? If it bothers you that much, EMPLOY ONLY ENGLISH BULDERS, TRADESMEN, CLEANERS ETC!
Seems to me we're more than happy to take advantage of these poor bastards!
What we're seeing at the moment is a balancing of inequality; when the Berlin wall came down, there was a huge inequality between east and west Germany. Unemployment was rife in the east and as a consequence huge number of "Easties" came to the west looking for work. Shortly after this, companies from the west started relocating to the east to take advantage of the huge number of unemployed (and hence cheap) labour leading to screams of protest from those in the west. There was a massive increase in right wing activity as R Soles tried to make political capital out of all the unrest.
In the end it settled down, a level of parity if not equality was reached; this will come to pass in this country too because let's face it, given the chance of a slightly lower standard (not massively lower as at present) living amongst your kith and kin versus the shit you have to put up with working away from home, what will the majority decide? If we all chased the dollar and high standards of living then London would be full and Scotland empty.
Talking about the poor bastards from the ex communist countries remember this: we rescued them from the Nazis and then abandoned them to the communists because we didn't have the guts to stand up to Uncle Joe at the end of WW2. So now whose fault is it?

I am not against colour or creed ...what I am concerned about is the fact that we try to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds. ..And no matter what or who comes to this country we are very tiny..this is what concerns me...I just dont see how we can keep accomodating all that want to come here. and at the end of the day unless we stand and be counted it will become stifling. There is hardly any housing at the moment and we have plenty of poor here of our own..and i mean genuine poor we should choose not to skim above the surface of our own needs over others all the time...this is where the unrest is coming from...and believe me Rev I do not turn my back on anyone.

Okay, so we're in danger of sinking but we also seem to be in need of low paid labour.
There needs to be a balance, whilst the I'm alright Jack attitude persists and we see the world in shades of them and us there will always be an imbalance; whilst we refuse to accept any cut in our living standards to allow a boost to the second and third worlds this imbalance will remain, whilst the imbalance remains then people will always move to areas of perceived wealth in a bid to lift them and theirs out of the shit.
Ask yourself this question; how bad would your life have to be before you would consider putting yourself in hock to a bunch of criminals for the outside chance of getting to a country whose language you do not speak, where you have no family or friends, where you just may be able to find poorly paid, exploitative work that will enable you to live in squalid conditions and from which you can be expelled at any moment with no right to claim any wages you may have been owed (a favourite trick).
Answers on a postcard to Secretary General UN.
Expanding the EU to include ex eastern bloc countries is addressing this imbalance, it opens our borders and allows free movement of money and goods without trade barriers. Westerners are buying up property in the east and holidaying out there because it's cheap; whilst I can see this lleading to Plaid Cymru style tactics in the future at least it means that more money moves into these countries, ditto people slaving their reproductive glands off and sending money home. In time a balance will occur and the flow in will stop.
But the problem is that we need to do this to the whole world, lose all trade tariffs that make it impossible for third world farmers to compete with the west, allow a level playing field. The problem is that this is political suicide, as the world stands it will lead to massive disruption in the west as we find ourselves being undercut by second and third world countires, as we watch our standard of life falling as theirs rises to match it. Not such a reduction, I think someone said that we would move back to 1950's standards.
And if you think about it things really are daft at the moment. There are families round where I live where every family member has a car, Mum, Dad and as many children as are old enough! And they complain that there isn't enough parking available! When I were a sprog (Cue Durassic park) in the 70's, it was the rare family that had two cars and we all dreamed of getting mopeds so that we could have some freedom! These days you're disadvantaged if you only have one widescreen telly or you only managed two weeks away in Wales!

1) Meanwhile - what about the poor and needy in this country ???
2) As to meeting the people - yes I have thank you - either accosting me in the street for money (whilst wearing the latest designer gear - which I can't afford for my kids) or purchasing their daily quantities of Jack Daniels, super strong lager and Superkings in the corner shop where I worked (for an asian incidently, who sacked me because I'm a white single female and he can get away with it)
3) The food they eat and the way they pray is of no consequence to me - each to their own
4) People seem to forget that racism exists in all quarters
And I reiterate - I am not racist !!!
5) Immigrants can come to this country and get money for resettlement - I want to move to be nearer my kids father so that he can help me with our youngest child - medical problems - do I get help? NO
6) Immigrants get a house thats kitted out with everything they need - I need a school uniform for my youngest because she's grown from a 36 chest to 40 - do i get help ? NO
7) I am a single parent and I have worked, bloody hard - circumstances make it impossible for me to do this now - so seeing as how I'm a single Mother I should be rolling in it !!! Pah what a bag of bo**ox
And just for the record - I don't read newspapers - so it would be a bit hard for me to regurgitate what I haven't seen - all I have to go off is how I've seen all races behave around where I live !! Oh and I did put my life in hock to move from family and friends for the safety of my kids !!! And I'm still paying for it now - 10 years later !!!!

That's my point in its entirety Rebelheart; several years ago single mothers were demonized by the red top tabloids as feckless scroungers who only had kids so that they could get council houses and extra benefits, do you recognise yourself in that description? From what you've written I think not.
Always remember that we soak up our opinions and views from many sources, normally talking to those around us, but we rarely question the value or accuracy of those sources or where they got their information from.
Never trust anyone who speaks in sweeping terms about an entire group of people, are all of us here 1/13 bikers? Did you see the programme on telly last week, Pramface I think it was called? It was about two single mothers who certainly didn’t fit the stereotype.
You put yourself in hock for the sake of your kids but you still stayed in the country and culture you know. Imagine making that move to a country of which you know nothing but what you have gleaned from the tales of others with only the clothes you stand up in. How would you hope to be received?
The social security/NHS is in a real bloody mess (my wife works with homeless / at risk families) and so many poverty traps exist for so many people but people never seem to remember that when politicians offer tax cuts!
The most important thing we have to try to bear in mind is that people don’t behave badly to each other because of their culture or skin colour, they do that because they are arseholes.

Rev for the record i was pretty much like yourself back in the late 70's 80's etc was totaly against racism etc then on sept 11 2001 things changed! over the following days we got to see folks from arab nations and muslims in general dancing in the street in celebration of the murder of thousands. at that point i changed (and many more like me too....)
originally your thread was about how government removes freedoms with the excuse that they are making life safer for us.(thats how it read to me.)
granted the thread indeed has gone down the road of immigrant bashing (so what thats part of the so called free society we live in!).
Are you aware that unemployment is now at its highest for years (1.8 million and rising though more like 7 million now idle according to government figures, all those on unemployment benefit + those on income support + those on the sick etc). as that is the case shouldnt our government look to training our own people to do the work nessersary rather than asset stripping other countries of their labour force? Great britain after all is the 4th richest country on earth according (again) to government figures (seen precious little of the money up here by the way.)
despite applying for on average 10 jobs per week i am still unemployed i also write on spec letters and am on the books of various agencies. Yet even up here in the sticks we see immigrants getting preferential treatment in the job market and the housing too.
this country is now being bullied into becoming a multi cultural society...... this will NEVER work. immigrants DO NOT INTIGRATE . They come here to better their life, but yet they do not like our values their children are taught (by the parents attitude) that the ways of their old country are better (if they were so much better why come here???). did you see dispatches on C4 recently? young muslim males saying that all british males are drunks and all british females have no morals...... how they want sharia law in their area's etc...... so its ok for one part of our so called multi cultural society to make sweeping statements about people based on race yet if an indiginous person said somthing similar they would be slated for bigotry and or racism..... surely double standards there.
and for the record i dont care what colour someone is i do however reserve the right to get pissed off at folk who threaten to blow us up and claim they are from a peacefull religion.
as for the eastern block immigrants we were told not to be all paranoid and little englanders about it when it was suggested that we would be innundated with em government estimated no more than 60,000 would arrive...... in fact over 600, 000 are now here and more are coming. if they have the skills needed then thats not a problem cept when you consider that their own country will have to fork out to train more people to take their place thereby making that country poorer.
for the first time ever the population of this country has exceeded 60 million. we are only a small island ffs, our resources are finite.
there has to come a time when enough is enough. either immigrants must embrace our way of life or leave...... and that goes for the second generation too. i dont want to see a government pandering to a minority and introducing a 2 tier legal system ie sharia law for them and the british legal system for the rest as has been suggested by one of the leaders of the council of british muslims. by and large the UK did away with religion having a say in politics and this country needs to remain secular. there must be a total seperation of state and religion.

one thing that irritates the hell out of me is that people who express an opinion which is against any particular group or body of people is immediately branded an "ist" or bigot.
their arguement however well thought out and reasoned is dismissed out of hand because it can be deemed non pc. effectively those who demand freedom of speech and equality can by using this tactic deny those very freedoms to others who do not agree with their point of view.
back to enoh powell again I am afraid.
and the tabliod reporting of the incident in Glasgow was not accurate. the crossing was only part of a continuous display of provocative gestures on the part of the goalie. the glasgow polis would not prosecute for that act alone but again it shows how a situation can be distorted to suit a minority.

You won't find me disagreeing with the general push of your argument and refer you to my earlier reply “True enough, you buy the full package when you emigrate, don't go to N Z if you're allergic to kiwi feathers, don't come to the UK if you want sharia law.”. Unfortunately I missed the Despatches programme but, yes, those sound like quotes from young men: ill informed, ill considered and arrogant; wonder what a similar group of young English males would have sounded like?
We delude ourselves if we think that we are living through anything that we haven’t seen before. We are living in uncertain times, things are happening too fast for many people and when that happens people seek out certainties, so much easier than actually thinking about things. You remember the 70s/80s and what shit was going down at the time, high unemployment, much uncertainty and, once again, rapid change. Back then it was Irish Nationalists dancing when murder was committed in the name of freedom but not all Irish supported them. The destruction of the World Trade Centre did more to turn ordinary Muslims against the extremists than anything before or since and it took an act of sheer genius on the part of Dubya to parlay that support into the contempt that many now feel. As for killing in the name of a peaceful religion, what’s new in that? The Crusades, the inquisition, the 100 year war, protestants killing catholics and vice versa to name but a few of the Christian ones; all in the name of the man who said “love thy neighbour” and “turn the other cheek”!
Oh the irony is killing me.
The Koran is as capable of being twisted by bigots and those who think they know what is best for all of us as is the Bible (from which it stems), most notably by the Wahhabis (major followers include Bin Laden’s shower).
I agree strongly with what RebelHeart said and that you have restated, racism is a two edged sword, “they” are as capable of being evil, small-minded bigots as the rest of us. I fought against it then and I will fight against it now, irrespective of the skin colour of the racist.
Can’t comment on the unemployment situation in the country at the moment but your figures ring true with what I have heard. I remember the late eighties when the construction industry was in a lousy slump, took me three months to find a job and that was looking nationwide. All the old evils are raising their heads again, more and more people on the building sites are on the lump, used to be the Irish but now the old Celtic Tiger is doing so well it now tends to be Eastern Bloc lads. Government could stamp it out if they wanted to but for some reason they aren’t doing anything about it despite “questions in the House”.
On the plus side, the English population is rapidly aging and all these young people coming in from the east may be the salvation of us all.
