my sister was updating her driving licence for a photo one last week and did it online
the DVLA could lift her signature and photograph from her last passport application and use that to create her Driving licence.
thats scary. very scary.

the prevention of terrorism is being used as an excuse to gather all manner of stuff to identify folk wether its fingerprinting, DNA gathering or iris scans. the fact is that none of the above will prevent a terrorist or a criminal from commiting their crimes.
Over here in the UK muslim women are allowed to wear a burka in their passport pictures and driving licence pictures this stupid piece of PC nonsence has already allowed at least two terrorist suspects to evade capture as the blokes just put on a burka and calmly walked through and got on the ferry to europe.
I think that gathering personally identifiable information such as DNA, fingerprints etc is something that government has been wanting to do for a long time and has little if anything to do with making life safer.
folk say that if you have nothing to hide then why would you be worried. but they are missing the point. The uk government has been wanting ID card legislation since they came to power and so far the majority of voters are dead set against it (mainly due to the cost estimates vary from 80 to over 200 hundred pounds per person). It seems that certain business concerns have been pressurising government with "we know have the technology to make them foolproof" and blair was falling over backward to give em the contracts.
Now fingerprints are just the tip of the technological iceberg, there is talk of placing electronic tags on car reg plate's and of sattalite trackable chips in tyres. This is nothing more than wanting to have the ability to track folk and build profiles on their travels. the excuse given is always "to prevent terrorism" this of course is nonsence
We in the UK have more CCTV camera's per head of population than anywhere in the world. Why? because they can be used to prevent terrorism is the excuse given (amongst others) they wont stop a bomb going off or a crime being commited but will perhaps make indentifying those that commit crime easier (oh really? with the current trend for ferral brats wearing hoods and masks? do you think so?) its technology for the sake of it. Our personal freedoms have been and are being eroded on a daily basis with that tired old excuse of making you safe. big business and the seeming need to control population are the driving forces of the current trend to gather DNA and fingerprints. terrorism has little to do with it.

well if all this technology is to keep us safe how come we have more crime than ever? and how come all these yobs that are wondering the streets beating people up and stabbing them or even shooting them are not getting caught and put behind bars where they belong?

thats the point i was making roe. its all a waste of money, the purpose is to keep plod busy elsewhere doing summat usefull like fleecing motorists. Criminals are dealt with on a "oh we'll get round to them later after we have done our tax gathering ".

DNA seems to be used mainly for old crimes like the 62 year old they are currently trying up her for murders 30 years ago. fine its great they can do that now and why should the old dodder get away with it.
but why can't they solve the ones that took place last week?
and would I be cynical in suggesting that they will get much less hassle lifting old guys than young fit blokes?
