do you love bikes that much it can ruin other parts of your life? e.g. have you ever ditched a girlfriend when all she could talk about was being cold and you ought to get a 'nice little car' ? even when she was soooo good lookin' she could give larry grayson a stiffie?

OK here goes nothing:
I read a book, you read the same book; we both take something different away with us because our understanding of what we have experienced is coloured by our perception which is, in turn, coloured by our life experience.
Bikes are the same; we all (I would hazard) ride or have enjoyed riding motorbikes but the thoughts and feelings we carry from a common experience are unique to each and every one of us. I was biased against twins until I had a go on an SV650, now I can begin to understand (OH LORD I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT) what people see in them.
Gixx, if i may be so bold, you are restating a view you have made in the past. To you bikes are all and everything; nothing will come between you and a motorcycle. There are others amongst us who would not have a dumped a bird so gorgeous that she would have converted a friend of Oscar merely because she did not enjoy riding pillion. That was your choice. It does not mean that any of us love bikes less than you do.
I tend towards the views expressed by Sozzle, kuchenhilfen, Steve_1, Mark et al. You either get bikes or you don't. It's a bit like horses, it's a passion you hold dear. I love the idea of horses but you will never catch me on top of one of the flat eared homicidal maniacs (we came to an agreement back in 1980. I wouldn't sit on them, they wouldn't try to kill me. we are both happy with this state of affairs).
You may love the C90, Musclebike, rat, HD chrome drain, RD250, Panther, fighter whatever. In the face of all reason you still love some aspect of motorcycling. In one of the books written by Sonny Barger he mentions a HA name of Chico who preferred cars over bikes but rode a chopper because he loved the camaraderie and lifestyle of the angels.
I give you the old phrase "Ride to live, live to ride", you may take that to mean that, unless you are 100% comitted to bikes you don't tick the box but tell me, how many of us on this site actually make our sole living from bikes and spend our entire leisure time at rallies or on rideouts? How many of us just enjoy motorcycles or some aspect of the lifestyle that is associated with them?
Don't fall into the trap of assuming that you have to live, breathe and crap bikes to get what they are about. Who is to say that the geek on his C90 isn't as passionate about bikes as the man on the fightered gxr1000?
To each, his own.

im a biker. i ride a bike pretty much on a daily basis. i go to rallies, parties and custom shows. I know patch holders and i know non patch holders, i know race rep riders and i know chop riders. if it has two wheels and a rider i will acknowledge it when im out riding about wether its a c90, a lambretta, a streetfighter, a chop or a classic.
i know where gixxer is coming from ....been there done that, wouldnt change a thing.
I can guess at why folk want to emulate their favourite racer and why folk want to emulate a 1%er.
Bikes and biking are like any other subculture...there is a percieved (by those involved) hierachy. For some, the pinnicle of biking will be for those who earn the right to put a patch on their back, for others it will be something different.
The one thing we all have in common, no matter what we ride, is the fragility of the life we lead. We are all aware that "this" ride could be our last and yet we all get on our machines and get out there.....Why? because we all love it, the feeling of being out there, the masters of our own destiny (or other such tosh) is why we do it. The simple pleasure of riding a machine from point A to point B rather than being encased in a metal box cut off from the elements.
i dunno.... all i do know is i wont be getting a car anytime soon and will carry on riding until i cant, i will carry on going to rallies and events and will no doubt get drunk and fall over a lot... Why? because i can!

I fit lots of those 'biker' criteria but I also fit lots of other stereotypes, I don't think you can say what a biker is in black and white. In my opinion, if you love something that's got two wheels, you're a biker (unless it's one of them funny bmw things with a roof, then you're just odd, lol). You don't have to be in a gang but if you like riding out with others that's cool.
I've got long hair and two tattoos and a peirced navel, but on the other hand I'm a very respectable lecturer for a living (well nearly respectable). My private life and work life are very different and it goes to show that you can't put everyone in a box with a label on it.
In my biking life I've been a cruiser owner, a scooter owner, a muscle bike owner, a sports bike owner and a commuter bike owner, I've had all kinds of bikes and loved them all for different reasons.
I'm just a biker.
