this may spark a healthy debate (I said healthy, no nastiness please)! But I have a horse racing dilemma! I have spent some of my life around horses (no jokes, we heard em all, lol) and they are not born natural runners, or jumpers. I can't decide whether or not I approve of horse racing. Some people say that the horses love it but I've seen the poor things afterwards and whilst they're being smacked and smacked to earn their already rich owners even more money. I keep trying to see things from both sides but really struggle. So many of their hearts give out and injuries seem to mean that they're shot immediately because they're not 'worth' anything. I'm not knocking those of you who like a flutter, god only knows I'd love to win money but I'm not sure about this......................thoughts?

Just about anything with 4 legs is born to run. Take horses in Africa aka Zebras, maybe not the right analogy but if they are chased they can run fast!!
To make them run faster than nature intended as in horse racing with fitness training and top feed........is it such a crime? They do get well treated , and yes i know if they are considered a donkey they are sent to the glue factory.
We certainly don't do this with human athletes, so perhaps a capping on the amount of horses in any one stable.
As the old saying goes "Its the sport of Kings" so whatever we think it will never go away as long as rich people can afford to pay for the upkeep and joe public keep betting to finance it all in the 1st place!!!!!!
As per usual the best bet to put on is how many will be shot today, there have been over 27 "humanely shot" since 1997. They don't show that on the tv do they!!

Fair point about things being born to run away from predetors, but that's too survive. I suppose we could argue that we're keeping the horses safe and away from predators, but even so their schedules seem gruelling to say the least.
Some good points ox, ta. x

I'm in two minds too ton up......I watched the re-run of the National today, and the riderless horses continued round the course, so I assume that they must enjoy it, but then when they were coming up to the finishing line, and the jockey in the lead was whipping his horse, I couldn't watch
