Buel lightning?? ok its a harley engine i know, but what`s the general opinon. Thinking of getting a test ride next weekend to see for myself but i value the opinon of previous owners more than a salesman. Wont part with my Bandit right enough...she will be with me till i pass her on in my will !!!

if it floats your boat fair enough but these bikes like roeby said are ugly as sin, and for just shy of £8000 give or take you can buy a much better, more reliable, more powerful and much much more attractive. Honda make the best engines, so i think they are used as a bench mark by other companies, so the point im trying to make is if honda make the best motors and they havent used the layout that those tractors use....sorry buells use i doubt its gonna catch on...maybe im wrong maybe every manufacturer will suddenly try it but i doubt it very much

it isnt necessarily about power, and in your opinion you can get a better bike, dnt forget bike voted it as their top cornering bike? as bear says its whatever floats your boat. the oil and fuel thing is a great idea, and erik buell is a genius a truly great engineer. they aint the best looking but they have got the character that most jap bikes lack. that can make up shedloads.

i never said it was about power, i personnaly think that there are too many things to go wrong on the bike, my sole point was that if this was such a ground breaking idea surely top manufacturers would have tried or used this concept. they might handle ok but i doubt very much that one would out handle a new 600 or 1000cc sports bike

honda make the best engines????? hmmmmm perhaps a little biased there si. granted most mid range jappers will snotter a buell on acceleration the handling is however from what i understand, brilliant. less weight up top the better a bike will handle. tis a similar thing to upside down forks making a bike handle better, (though in that case its down to unsprung wieght). noticed for a while that honda are putting out large V twins in an attempt to whoo the harley brigade to their way of thinking, also notice that harley davidson are still doing rather well in the selling bikes stakes, make of that what you will. as far as im concerned i wouldnt buy a sporty enginged bike or for that matter a honda. dont like either of em. honda have made some belting bikes in the past but today's offerings leave a lot to be desired IMO.

not biased towards honda at all, ive only had 1 previous honda to the race bike i have now, if anything the R1 was an awesome bike, i should have really said ''in my opinion i think honda make the best motors'' which in comparison to the buells there a different league, as for honda's making harley styled bikes what has that got to do with this thread? most manufacturers are doing the same arent they? Honda is a tried and tested name, are Buells?

As someone has already mentioned earlier in this thread, you can't get any clothes with 'Buell' written on it, so thats an obvious reason for not buying one then....... The look is individual, i like it, some don't thats what biking is all about, i have a couple of m8's with them and they've been plenty reliable and sound great too. Another one to consider might be the Yamaha MT-01 which for my money is aimed to steal Buell sales. Alternatively treat yourself to the latest Honda Race Rep technology and when you have that absolutely fantastic day out at the local BSB/WSB event, be careful you don't lose it amongst a sea of bikes that all look identical. If thats the road you go, don't forget your ultra-bright leathers and a nice new kneeslider to match. Every so often i remember why there's a difference between biker's and motorcyclists... Smoky.

Honda are famous for recalls cam chains soft cams naff big ends cush drives that fall apart. Then there is Kawasaki, Suzuki and every other manufacturer who at one time or another made a ricket. Nothing wrong with a Buell, certainly not with the design for fuel and oil, think some others moved the fuel tanks about didnt they, still do. If you trying to keep a engine bay tidy and can utilise another part of the bike to store fluids why the hell not. Its one thing having an opinion its another slating something because you dont understand/like it. And Roe, its not like a bucket of frogs, its actually an attractive design thats won some awards.

i totally understand why the concept is used, i just think if the idea was so good and ground breaking why isn't it more commonly used, like i said its whatever floats your boat

dunno that eric buell was the first to do oil and fuel where it is but am sure other designers/engineers will follow. iv owned a lot of bikes from the big 4 every honda i had gave me grief as did the kawi's the suzuki's tended to be bombproof but let down by electrics. the most reliable bikes i have owned were yamaha's (had some stinkers from them too).

Intresting points of veiw from all. Looks are a very individual thing, some will like em and some wont, i think they look good cos there diffrent from the norm. Ive heard about the handeling aswell and i would rather get a buzz out of the twisty roads than just blasting down the motorway at 190mph. Dont get me wrong i would love to buy an R1/gsxr/blade/zx10 but like a lot of us im carrying old war wounds that wont let me sit on a sports bike with my legs positioned like a racehorse jockey for more than half an hour, hence the thought of a bike of this type. My other option is to spend more on my bandit, already done loads but thinking of wiesco 1277 or 1340 pistons ect (170bhp) that would probably give me all the fun i could handle!!!! Still gonna test ride the Buel though. I will post my thoughts thereafter. Cheers.

Umm, just a thought on the whole "why doesn't everyone else do it" for the fuel in the frame.... Maybe Buell has patented the concept? Much like Ducati patenting their engine design.

Give it a test ride you may enjoy it.The lightning doesnt have the fuel in frame thats the xb12r and the xb9r. Ya can get Buell clothing (not much though). The torque on them is good and they alot of fun to ride.Enjoy !
