Hi guys, have a big problem. My bike is not firing on cylinder 1.
Setup:
- Coil A feeds cyl 2 + 3
- Coil B feeds cyl 1 + 4
Actions taken so far:
- Replaced all plugs
- Swapped plug caps between cyl 1 + cyl 2
- Checked continuity on lead to cyl 1
Next step:
- Swap coils
If there is anything I am overlooking, or if there is anything extra to check, please let me know. I'm pulling my hair out with this one, riding a bike on 3 cylinders is not great.

coil breaking down under load? swap coils over if the problem shifts to the corresponding pot its the coil.

Hi TC if you are getting a spark from lead one,The next step might be to do a compression check on cylinder one.At least that will eliminate problems with the pistons ect.
Hope this helps.
Regards Colin.

Like I said, next step is swapping the coils, will be doing that tonight. Strange thing is, the bike doesn't seem too phased by the missing cylinder. You can hear the engine is rough, it won't idle, and its more difficult to pull away, but once moving, it goes like there is almost nothing wrong with it (although can still hear the engine is not running properly).

Unlikely to be the coil, if they go phut! you lose two cylinders.
Try putting your finger on the end of the spark plug to cylinder 1 and turning the engine over.
Oh I forgot to say, get a mate to video you doing this and post it on you-tube, I could do with a laugh!

if its not ignition it might be carbs, try cleaning the no1 pilot jet. when was the last time the clearences were checked? if the valves arent closing it wont run due to no compresssion.

Lead seems to be ok.
Not sure if its a compression problem, but it seems to me that even if it has no compression, if the plug is firing, it should be burning fuel, and therefore making the exhaust header warm. But the header is ice cold while the others are warming up.

If it is sparking then its probably fuel to that cylinder problems or compression. Check as gixxer said and for air leaks in the manifolds.

it wont warm up if theres no fuel coming through the slow running (pilot) jet if its blocked! does it run on 4 above tickover? if it does,. its yer bloody bloody pilot jet. check it, THEN post again. lol! does it backfire occasionally when yer starting it?

changed the coils over, same thing. doesn't backfire, doesn't run on 4 ever. i suspect its a compression issue. will be changing the leads, just in case, but also trying to get a compression tester. i'm leaning towards a stuck valve. but if its compression, will have to wait another week before i can strip the head to find the problem

@rev
wont catch me out on that one again.
modified a CB400 twin, put an 1100RC tank on it, the petrol tap was right next to the plug, went to check if the tap was on, and grabbed the plug cap instead....
i'm sure you can imagine the polite words thereafter....

dont strip it till youve done the compression test and checked the valve clearances. what bike is it by the way?

Quick test to try, bung a squirt of oil down through the offending cylinder and see (through plug hole)if it runs. The oil should momenteraly seal the piston and allow bike to run for a few seconds. If this test checks out, then u got a compression problem in cyl 1.

Bike is a kawasaki FX400R (naked gpz).
Will be have a look at it on sunday when I get back from weekend away. Struggling to find a compression tester to fit my bike (plugs are deep in the engine). going to throw some 'valve ease' into the tank to see if that will help. will prob check the carbs as well, but that will be next weekend.
