I don't endorse riding in t-shirts & jeans , but i do endorse people's right to wear whatever they like. We all know the risks.. Plus its hard to look coool... when ur wearing leathers and running apes too ;-)

funny thing, i wouldn't ride without my leathers on now but i learnt to ride in jeans probably the time u r most likely to come off lol
i know your leathers won't save your life but i think if u come off with leathers on u will probably be better off than if u don't wear em. main reason is the road suface loves eatting your skin as u skid down the road. if leathers don't do anything for ya why do racers wear em? they have big massive accidents and usually (not all the time) walk away ok. mind u infairness thats probably got alot to do with nice big run off areas and no street furniture or on coming vehicles to worry about.
i once heard about a surgeon who said he liked working on bikers who had come off in leathers cos at least u had all the bits to work with. your jeans and t-shirt won't keep u together.

Did anyone actually read the article?
Now,look at that young girl and tell me truthfully,if she had her leathers on,would she be in better or worse nick than she is now.
Personally,She should have had protection on but I am inclined to blame the ballbag rider for going too fast that she couldnt hang on.
Go back, read the article and have a 2nd thought on the matter.
Personally, after having a low speed spill in jeans and T shirt,I know what happened to me at 10mph!Friction burns on arms and legs which I still have!
I never get on the bike now without lid and leathers. As Roeby says,Why do racers wear leathers?
Maybe at this years TT races, they will all wear levi 501,s and wrangler jackets as everyone seems to think they are safe!
rant over!

yeah but u can't say ....... oh i'm not going to fall off or have an accident today ....... it just happens and theres nothing u can do about it.
i once saw a little girl on the back of a big sports bike (can't remember which now) anyway it was summer and the rider had full leathers on gloves the lot ....... she had a vest top short skirt and flip flops .......... the only protection she had was a helmet. now don't tell me thats right or reasonable or responsible.

Totally agree with flyin!
For christs sake what is wrong with you people, a low or high speed tumble from a bike is dangerous enough but when you're not wearing leathers you not only risk your life through infection but also waste other peoples time and money in correcting your mistake.
A mate of mine had a low speed off a few years back and was only wearing jeans and t-shirt, he said that he didn't feel anything when hitting the deck but as he went to stand when he'd stopped skidding along the ground he saw the trail of blood left and then noticed his arm and hip! The worst thing for him after this was not only the pain and dressings be changed at least once a day, but also the nurse who had to come to his home daily washing and pick small fragments of gravel out of his skin as his body was rejecting them after being buried so deep.
Nobody can make anybody do anything but I really think that people should think about the consequences of doing something before taking that risk.... unfortunately I am in a small category here
Around 45% of bike accidents are caused by rider error, if we are all this likely to be cause then at least wear the protection so that you don't mess up others peoples day as well as yours.
Leathers do not make you feel invicible or a bad rider, their purpose is to act as your second skin. For anyone who has had an off wearing leathers, look at the leathers and then say what that would've felt like if it was your own skin (which is not as hard wearing).
Rant over...... I think

i'll own up to something here ........... i tell riders off on a regular basis for only wearing t-shirt and jeans, whether they r on a scooter or a bike, if i can actually speak to them then i'm quite nice about it and they usually say "oh yeah i know but its hot and my leathers make me hotter" but if i am in the car and they are on the bike i just usually shout at them and tell them they r a w***** verbally or with hand signals!

i have to agree with flyin, i had a prang a few years ago, if i hadn't been wearing leathers, i hate to think what would have happened to me, if not killed i would not be in any fit state to be a mum to my kids or provide money by going out to work.
i have never ridden without leathers and won't let my son ride his ped without his protective clothing. i don't ride like an idiot just coz i have leathers on, i ride within my ability.
tis may cause some debate but i feel that peeps who ride like idiots r only thinking of themselves, they are selfish, what about the peeps they might hurt, leave kids without a mum or dad, or a mum or dad without kids.
we all have a duty to protect ourselves and others.
soz, just my opinion

To be honest, i don't give a toss about the young girl in the article, i don't know her & therefore i don't care one way or another.
We wouldn't 'advise' or 'rant' on an individuals choice of bike, so why do we feel the need to wax lyrical on people's choice of riding gear?
Like i said before we all know the risks, if you ain't prepared to pay the piper, don't dance to the tune.
Roeby hun, you're a game lass, if a stranger was doing/saying that to me because of what i choose to wear while riding, best case scenario would be a dented door from my boot, or in the case of a female, her hubby/boyfriend etc would get the brunt of it.. I don't feel you have the right to talk like that to a complete stranger & not expect drama over it.

right..... in summer i usually wear jeans and an MA1 flight jacket, in winter i wear jeans and an armoured supposedly waterproof cordura thing. I have nothing against wearing leather (not those dayglo romper suits beloved of race replica riders they truly are orrible). i havnt had a gravel rash inducing off in years (actually iv never had gravel rash well maybe a few small grazes when i was 18.)
i do however believe in risk compensation. this is what happens when an individual buys loads of safety gear and then thinks they are less likely to have a crash." racers wear them so they must be good" is an example of risk compensation thought .
the volvo ads that claimed their cars were the safest in the world is another example. folk chosse to believe what they are told and then go out and drive/ride like TWA*S!
Riding a race rep does NOT make a person a better rider! nor does dressing up in leathers make you safer! Sure the leather will protect yer skin but the actual putting on of a one piece suit will not turn you into rossi!!!!
Its a bout choice. wear what you like and what you feel comfertable in but dont think for one second that what clothes you put on will make you safer.
putting on camo pants dosnt make you a soldier nor does the donning of a one piece leather suit make you a racer.

My riding gear ...
Personally i do wear leathers the majority of the time ...
Very occasionally just jacket and jeans (possibly 501's lol)
On very very very rare occasions i pop down local garage in jeans n T-Shirt
(very likely a cheep t-shirt without any super dooper superstrength padding)
Oh and my leathers are black (possibly quite crap ones really)
Im not a dayglo power ranger with invincible strength!
I ride quite slow at times tho to accomadate my inabilities!
The Bottom line is that it is actually down to the individual ...
If a pillion is involved then its maybe its polite for the rider to suggest suitable clothing should the pillion be unaware of dangers involved ...
This 'note' is no different from carrying passengers in/on any vehicle
Everyone to their own is my take on it ...
However i do applaud 'flying's attempt to highlight the dangers of incorrect clothing.
And on a lighter note ...
Girls partially clothed in leather sounds good to me ...
Hopefully they wont have any rashes or loss of limbs to ruin the image!

As Ive already stated my opinion is that its up to the individual ...
However for the people who have not read the article that the link refers to ...
This is the final paragraph ...
"My road rash will take several years to completely heal and will never look or feel normal again. I have conquered the only fear that kept me from riding and I will never put myself in the same position to receive such injuries as I have lived through this past year. I stress the importance of wearing full gear to each and every person I ride with, talk to, or even who happens to read my story. I believe that my experiences are a lesson to every type of rider or passenger. I would never wish the pain I felt and still feel today upon anyone in this world. It is completely avoidable with a few extra layers, and I can’t say it enough: it is undeniably worth it to gear up. Everything I have gone through this past year will not be in vain if my testimony is enough to save someone’s skin."
^ The conclusion from someone involved in a crash with inapropriate clothing.
I think common sense would lead most to wear something that would protect.
As for her so called friend 'Shaun' who decided riding 'fast' with her on the back with inadequait clothing ... friend id say would be a bad description.
But hey ho .... it aint my problem

I think is more to do with peoples ignorence bear, it has no reflection on what leathers/clothing they are wearing or what bike they're riding. Some people go out to ride fast, some people go out to enjoy the views, others do it for commuting, etc. In no one category of rider can anyone say that one particular type of rider is bad because of whatever the reason. Every rider has faults and I get really hacked off when people are categorised. Not every rider has the same reasoning as their "bike type"'s category.
To me this "categorisation" is no different to being racist or sexist, some people are too quick to judge before they look at themself.
If people want to ride like lunatics on the road nobody can stop them from doing it (aside pulling out in front of them) but this is not about who thinks they're the best rider because of what they wear or what bike they ride, it'a about protecting ourselves and saving lives!
All that I am saying is that people are selfish, accidents are caused by selfishness usually some twat (regardless of their bike/scooter) thinking I can make that at this speed or I can't see anything (maybe because their eyes are closed to everything around them) so I'll go.
By not wearing leathers/protective clothing you are adding to the statistics of accident costs (more of the countries money wasted on accident clearups when it could be invested in something good for everyone) and stress to everybody by wasting their time (waiting for your accident to be cleared away if you come off).
This should be about protecting ourselves and others, but I suppose this thread just sums up the general publics dumbass views of "I'm ok, so what business is it of yours".
Sorry to harp on guys but selfishness and ignorence are unneccessary for any reasonings.
Maybe if the government were to change the entire motorcycle testing routine by making people aware of "when something goes wrong on a bike, it goes really wrong" alot of people wouldn't have these bad attitudes.
Rant over..... temporarily (lol)
